Scabies

  • Scabies is caused by scabies mites and needs medical treatment. OMC Virtual Care connects individuals with providers for necessary prescriptions.

  • Scabies, or the seven-year itch, is a skin infection from the scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. Mites burrow into the skin, causing a delayed allergic reaction. Mild cases involve fewer than 20 mites.

  • Scabies spreads through direct skin contact, including sexual contact and close contact in crowded places like prisons and day-care centers. Symptoms are not required for transmission.

  • Symptoms can take up to two months to appear. Common signs include small, linear tracks from mite burrows, found between fingers and toes, on the palms and soles, and in skin folds near the stomach and genitals. Severe itching, especially at night, is common. Crusted scabies, or Norwegian scabies, involves a massive infestation and occurs in those with compromised immune systems, like HIV or cancer patients.

  • Diagnosis is based on clinical history, physical exam, or microscopic studies. Effective treatment requires prescription scabicides that kill mites and their eggs

  • Mild scabies can be treated with topical creams, while severe cases need both topical and oral medications. Common treatments include:

    • Crotamiton (Eurax)

    • Ivermectin

    • Lindane lotion 1%

    • Permethrin Cream (Elimite)

    • Spinosad (Natroba)

    • Sulfur ointment

    Lifestyle changes, like decontaminating towels, clothing, and bedding, and treating close contacts simultaneously, are crucial
