  • Cold sores are painful blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus.

    Most cold sore medications require a prescription. OMC Virtual Care connects individuals with providers who can prescribe necessary treatments.

  • Common medications include acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) in pill form. Topical treatments include acyclovir and penciclovir (Denavir).

    Prescription medications can shorten cold sore duration and reduce recurrence, especially if taken early.

  • Side effects may include upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and more severe reactions affecting the nervous system, kidneys, joints, and blood cells. Consult a provider before starting treatment.
