Cholesterol

We only bill you for the consultation itself. The cost of any prescribed medications is charged separately by the pharmacy when you pick them up.

This way, you're only paying for what you need, and medication costs are handled directly at your chosen pharmacy.

Cholesterol

  • High cholesterol, with abnormal LDL and HDL levels, is common. OMC Virtual Care connects individuals with providers for cholesterol-lowering prescriptions.

  • High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia) can be caused by obesity, genetics, medical conditions like hypothyroidism or diabetes, stress, and certain medications. Sometimes, no cause is identifiable.

  • Often symptomless, high cholesterol can harden blood vessels, increasing heart attack or stroke risk. Some may develop yellow skin lesions (xanthomata or xanthelasma). Detection is via blood tests.

  • Medications lower high LDL or improve low HDL cholesterol. Examples include:

    - Statins: Atorvastatin (Lipitor), Lovastatin (Mevacor), Pravastatin (Pravachol), Rosuvastatin (Crestor), Simvastatin (Zocor)

    - Others: Alirocumab (Praluent), Bempedoic Acid (Nexletol), Colesevelam (Welchol), Evolocumab (Repatha), Ezetimibe (Zetia), Fenofibrate, Gemfibrozil (Lopid), Niaspan, Pitavastatin (Livalo), Vascepa, Vytorin

Medications should be used under medical supervision.

  • Lifestyle changes can help reduce cholesterol: quit smoking, achieve a healthy weight, reduce alcohol, increase physical activity, and eat more vegetables, fruits, and fiber.
